Eye on the Sky

Before Sugar Plum Farm was built, the rainbows and sunrises that frequent the skies were never quite as vibrant. This summer, we have seen a multitude of colors and clouds in the barnyard sky. Notably, we have had a few double rainbows, as well as an entire arch that stretched from one end of the farm to the other. These fantastic, memorable views remind us that uncontrollable forces surround us. While we can choose how we view the skies, we cannot change the palette of colors, the timing of the sunrise, nor the shape of the clouds.

Perhaps, this reminder is needed during the pandemic: humans can only change so much, and the rest is left to nature. Needless to say, we hope the weather is symbolic of the good fortune and bright days that lay ahead, even though life around us continues to be unpredictable. Although, some parts of our lives continue to be predictable, like the cycle of raising our foals and letting them go once they are yearlings.

Most of this years’ yearlings have either left the farm or will be departing shortly. We will miss them dearly, but we know they will be treated excellently by their new owners! However, this space will quickly be filled, and this process has already begun. A few days ago, we received three horses sired by War Dancer: War of Thrones, a two-year-old colt; You’ve Got Male, a two-year-old colt; and Spanish Dreamer, a two-year-old filly. Additionally, a few mares and foals will be joining us from Kentucky.

Another big “to-do” is weaning all of the foals. Although, this year it may be a bit easier since we have chosen to let them nurse a bit longer than usual. All of the foals, especially the boys, are starting to get much more mischievous. They’re like super-sized toddlers, but instead of playing with legos or building blocks, they play with each other with their hooves and mouths. More similar to toddlers, however, is their obsession with having something to put in their mouths. Whether it be a lead rope, a handful of grain, or your arm, the foals really seem to like something to chew on. The foals, along with us, are also glad that the summer heat is finally beginning to subside.

Whatever the future, whatever the weather and whatever is going on outside of your control:

Stay safe, stay healthy, and (try to) stay happy
